The village of Gradara stands on the crest of a hill, with its magnificent fortress overlooking the entire valley between Pesaro and Cattolica, emerging with its imposing structure and its double wall. Gradara Castle is one of the best preserved medieval fortifications in Italy and is famous, according to tradition, for being where the tragic love story between Paolo Malatesta and Francesca da Polenta took place, as poet Dante described in his Divine Comedy. Built as a defensive fortress, the castle became the residence of the familes that ruled this territory between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: Malatesta, Sforza, Borgia and Della Rovere. During the year there are many events and gatherings which attract thousands of visitors to this enchanting medieval venue: the Siege of the Castle, Gradara d’Amare, Christmas Castle and The Magic Castle.
